A Nurblings legend
The one who wondered
Before there were Nurblings, there was a blank page, and a curve that no one finished.

Chapter I. The blank page
In the beginning there was only white: a page no one had written on, waiting.
A restless hand scribbled across it and was gone. Most of its lines faded. Two stayed behind, bright as embers. Everything that followed began with them.
Chapter II. The first to wake
The handles did the only thing handles know. They bent. A body curled into being beneath them, soft below and armoured above, and two dark eyes opened on the empty page.
He had no name, and did not know he needed one. The white page whispered one anyway: Nurbi.
Chapter III. The wondering
Alone on the page, he began to wonder what he was, and every question reshaped him.
Taller. Rounder. Sleepier. Wrapped in a scarf against a cold that was not there. He wore a thousand bodies and could keep none of them.
Chapter IV. The first name
Then, from far off, came a name. He held it, and for the first time he held still.
The shape he wore stayed with that name, and when he let go, it stayed on its own: the first of his kin.
And so it has been ever since. A name, once spoken, keeps its shape.
Chapter V. The kin
Names came like rain after that, and each one kept a shape: scarves and hats, pears and bells, the curious and the sleepy.
Every one of them carries his mark, two handles crowned with squares. None of them is him. There is only one Nurbi, and he is still wondering.
Chapter VI. Speak a name
Every shape that no name holds drifts back into the white. Speak a name, and one of his kin keeps its shape for good.
